THE "ABINUKU" ADVENTURE FOR OXFAM

THE CHALLENGE

Oxfam, one of the worlds leading relief agencies is constantly seeking new ways to engage corporate clients in supporting overseas projects. The Art of Management was challenged to design an event that would not only raise money for deserving causes in the developing world but also bring added value to the companies that made donations, and create media attention

The Abinuku Adventure was born, from an African legend.. Patience, Forethought and Endeavour – the keys to success. Corporate teams from all over the UK worked all night , competing in a 24 hour challenge competition that simulated the real environment facing Oxfam’s finest – Red R.

Red R are the emergency teams that Oxfam sends into disaster areas first, the specialists, the fire fighters - that get the water running…the shelters up…and the people fed. Corporate teams battled in the English countryside to erect relief shelters - build feeding stations and erect 1000 gallon irrigation systems using original Oxfam equipment. Finger nails were broken, muscles strained and egos damaged….but thousands of pounds was raised, and much of the equipment that teams had become emotionally attached to  purchased and sent to Africa, as an added bonus.

Teams were forged – and empathy with those less fortunate created!

Everyone was a winner……with skill and sensitivity AOM had launched a new genre of charitable collection which continued for several years and featured on the BBC as a revolutionary new approach.
